Weekend Market Update

June 30-July 1, 2007

The Federal Reserve met this week and left its benchmark interest rate unchanged, but its outlook statement afterwards said price pressures remain a key concern. U.S. interest rate futures dropped the odds from 50% before the meeting to 20% after the meeting that the Fed would cut rates this year. Crude oil prices poked above $70 a barrel on Friday, and the government reported anti-inflationary data with May’s Personal Consumption Expenditure index reading its lowest since March, 2004. Mortgage interest rates eased off this week from a recent ascent, and the 10-year Treasury backed down a bit to yield 5.05% in Friday’s trading.
