Weekend Market Update

U.S. stock market indices hit all-time highs this week as Treasuries and mortgage interest rates were choppy but essentially unchanged week-over-week. General Electric announced it was selling its sub-prime mortgage division after losing half a billion dollars in the first half of 2007. GE also announced it was pumping up a stock buyback program to $14 billion, and such corporate buybacks and a positive corporate merger and acquisition environment have helped to propel stocks since February, in spite of rising oil prices, higher interest rates, and those sub-prime mortgage woes. The Reuters/University of Michigan sentiment survey was mixed on inflation expectations, watched carefully by Federal Reserve monetary policy makers. One-year inflation expectations eased slightly, while five-year inflation expectations rose.
